It happens every year: a new trendy color begins popping up in storefronts, on social media and in home decor. As designers, architects and building professionals, it’s important to have an understanding of current and future color trends and their influences in order to create spaces that will meet the needs of your clients.
As we approach 2020, colors are beginning to shift to be a bit brighter from where we’ve been over the past few years, but the hues are still generally very muted. Millennial pink and blush colors will continue to trend in the coming year, but will mature a bit. Though Millennial Pink hues exploded in popularity over the past few years, this range of pinks continue to trend due to its classic aesthetic that promotes calmness and a softness that helps consumers escape the “digital noise.” These hues can fit perfectly into almost every room, adding an air of elegance and relaxation to any space. Complementary to any skin tone, these colors also prove to be an ideal choice for a bathroom or closet.
The faster technology moves and the more convenience it offers, the more we seek activities, experiences and lifestyles that impart slowness and realness into our lives. This need for simplicity and escapism from technology is in part, the reason that society is craving hues that bring us closer to nature such as deep oranges and yellows, ocean and sky blues and lush greens.
Earthy colors such as saffron and turmeric will be very strong for the upcoming year. Perfect on a front door, as an accent wall in a bedroom or in a dining room, these hues can provide a rich, striking look. Often too bold for use on all four walls, these colors can easily end up overpowering a room, so use sparingly! Deep oranges and yellows are also appearing more prominently in various textiles, furniture and home décor items to create bold and lively spaces.
There is an increasing need for connection in today’s unmoored world, and we are starting to see several shades of blue bubble to the surface to help fill the void, as blue conveys trust and stability. ues such as cobalt and Klein blue – two trending, high-intensity colors – are taking the automotive, consumer electronics and fashion industries by storm. Whereas deep, muted navy hues are growing in popularity in both residential and hospitality design.
Blue is the best possible entry point from the world of neutrals to the world of color as consumers are looking to take a break from grays. Placing the color in strategic locations freshen and update spaces without overwhelming them.
